Week 4 - Study Tips & Research Opportunity

It's week four already! How is your study going???
Have you discovered any great study tips you could share? Please let us know by posting them here!

Tip of the Week
One student shared with me her idea for keeping on top of her work each week...
She uses 1 small sticky note for each specific study task. For example, a reading, an online discussion post, a reading for an assignment, time spent writing a reference list etc.
Each task is then stuck onto the LTU study planner on the appropriate days. This helps her to see how much work there is each week and helps her to break down each assignment into smaller tasks which seem more achieveable.
You can use a different coloured sticky note for each course.
Then there is the satisfaction of ripping off the sticky note after each task has been accomplished...

It might be worth giving it a try...

Discover Your Learning Style
The Uni of Melbourne, as part of their 'Success in Tertiary Study' web resource, has developed a resource for uni students to discover their learning style...

"People learn and process information in a variety of ways. Some have particular strengths in some areas and weaknesses in others (for example, Einstein was dyslexic but excelled in Physics).

A learning style refers to how the mind receives and processes information. There are many different systems and inventories for determining learning styles. Some subjects tend to favour certain learning styles. For example, Philosophy may favour a more abstract thinking style compared with Art which may benefit from a more practical style. "

In Your Own Words: The Voice and Opinions of Young People with Disability

If you are a young person with disability, the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC), the Youth Disability Advocacy Service (YDAS), Children with Disability Australia (CDA) and the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) want to hear from you!

These organisations believe that it is important that more young people in Australia have the opportunity to share their views and opinions with other young people, their communities and with government about:what they think is important and
  • what they would like to happen in their lives, community and Australia today.

Young people with disability, now and in the past, have had few opportunities to be part of these processes, to have their voices heard and become young leaders.

This survey aims to help young people with disability represent their views

The survey will take 15-20 minutes to complete and all of your responses are anonymous.

So, what will we do with the results?
A short report will be written and presented to the Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth, the Minister for Disability Reform, the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Carers and the Minister for Social Inclusion for their consideration.
The results of this survey will be presented in September at a National Youth Disability Conference for young people with disability.

What's all the talk about the NDIS???

What's all the talk about the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme)??
In the recent budget, the Australian Government has committed $1 billion to support the first stage of a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The NDIS is a proposal for a Medicare-like system for people with a disability. It is a national no-fault insurance scheme that provides funding for people with a disability for personal support, therapy, aids and equipment, home modifications, and employment training.

An NDIS would assist individuals with a permanent disability, no matter how, or when, their disability is acquired, and it would be based on the needs of the individuals, include funding for all aids required for living, maximise independence and give people with a disability choice.

The NDIS website has more information and can be found here: http://www.ndis.gov.au/
Here are links to some recent articles:
Wendy Harmer explains, "It's not only people with a disability who should be cheering the budget's $1 billion commitment to a National Disability Insurance Scheme. Every one of us should be applauding like mad." See article here: http://www.abc.net.au/rampup/articles/2012/05/11/3501034.htm

Christopher Boyle writes, "Ending the education lottery: why the government must extend the NDIS to schools", see here: http://www.abc.net.au/rampup/articles/2012/05/15/3503212.htm

Tim Ferguson Interview
You probably remember comic Tim Ferguson jumping around on stage as part of the mad and bad musical comedy trio The Doug Anthony All Stars. He was, he admits, the pretty one. The act was still playing to packed houses in the mid-'90s and many wondered why it broke up. Tim Ferguson has only recently revealed he'd been living with the debilitating symptoms of multiple sclerosis, a condition he'd tried for years to ignore, but is now perhaps inevitably the subject of a new show...

Study Break

We hope you enjoy your well-deserved study break!

While the study break can be a time to catch up on missed work and work on assignments, don't forget to spend some time relaxing too!!

It's important to maintain balance between study, work, home life and fun...
Here's a few tips:
  • Develop a supportive network of family, friends, students support services and other students.
  • Connect with other students.
  • Use weekly study planners and guides to help organise and track your time.
  • Set small and specific goals to help keep you focussed.
  • Schedule in time for exercise and fun activities (don't let study take over!).
If you want to talk with someone about how to get balance into your life, a counsellor at the LTU can help.

How's your academic writing???

We covered reading last week, but how's your writing??

Many students with disabilities have to develop strategies to manage the impact of their disability on writing tasks. Students who experience pain or fatigue when writing, schedule frequent rest breaks, and may work in a variety of positions, such as lying down with a laptop, standing at a lectern and sitting at a desk. It is important to ensure that your working environment is ergonomically designed and that you are aware of good working postures, especially when working at a computer for long periods.

Many students find simple strategies can minimise pain and fatigue associated with long writing stints. These include:
  • Frequent rest breaks.
  • Ergonomic work station. See here for tips: http://www.unisa.edu.au/ohsw/procedures/workstationarrangement.asp
  • Get started early. Having short days writing is better than a few days of cramming.
  • Learn to use keyboard shortcuts.
  • Be mindful of your body. Stop and rest if you are experiencing additional pain or fatigue.
  • Work at times of the day that suit you. No point starting at 7.00am if you can't think.
  • Make sure your keyboard and mouse suit your needs.
  • Use writing resources to improve your academic writing skills. For example the academic writing online tutorial: http://resource.unisa.edu.au/course/view.php?id=1335
If you need help to manage the impact of your disability on writing speak with a Disability Adviser: http://www.unisa.edu.au/disabilityservices/contact/appointment.asp
